Caring for Your Dog Through Indian Monsoons

Monsoon Magic (and Mud): Keeping Your Dog Safe in the Indian Rains

The Indian monsoon brings relief from the heat, but it also brings a spike in skin infections and waterborne diseases.

The monsoon protection plan:

The Tick Boom

Humidity is breeding season for ticks and fleas. Ensure your dog is on a vet-approved spot-on or oral preventive before the first rains hit. Check hot spots, such as between toes and behind ears, after every walk.

Paw Hygiene

Standing water in India is often contaminated. Always wash your dog's paws with plain water and dry them thoroughly after walks. Damp paws are a magnet for fungal infections such as pododermatitis.

The Lepto Threat

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals, often rats, and can linger in puddles.

Red Flags

High fever, vomiting, lethargy, or a yellowish tint to the gums or eyes can signal trouble. If your dog drinks from a puddle and shows these signs, it is a medical emergency.
